There's nothing as painful as trying to hold on to something that has been lost forever.
The hope, the faith, the expectation – nothing hurts more.

Pulling back a slacking string,
hoping to hold a grip,
but only ending up stretching it further,
maybe even hurting your hands.

Trying to hold a relationship that has withered,
hoping to rekindle a fire that's dying away,
but only ending up wasting more precious time.

Trying to water a plant that has died,
hoping to provide it with enough hydration
to spring its roots back to life,
but only ending up making the ground muddy.
