*WERE AT WAR GROWING UP!*

Many questions arose along the line
They troubled a child to live a life
Already in tears
Uncertainties,
Worries and fears

Our first fault was we never queried our folks
If we ever did, we got some strokes
Father was stern
Eyes blazing and nostrils smoky
He wasn’t a smoker of anything other than my heart
The sight of him was a red light on our part

Is this not the man whose line we follow?
Mum a mobile armory
Waiting to discharge its content
Of course the training Did the grooming
And our compliance still got us groaning
But we had it hot
It began with curiosity, worries and then fears
But ended up getting us into more troubles...

Who would have thought that a hare would ever be afraid to run?
Who would have thought a leopard would ever be afraid to fight even the gun?

Will our tomorrow come bright?
Can we contest in the light
We ran like the hare in the forest of our home while dad enjoyed
The chase like the leopard having its delayed meal!

What a nap would have resolved a slap got it fixed
Fixed it was the party that took my long hair off my scalp
Ifeoma’s birthday was to me first in line
I discovered that last it was in dads plan for me
The dress that got me gay and the hair from a young girls pay
Ended in ashes

What took my salonist a whole day to fix?
Had dad a few minutes to unfix

A child ought to study papa’s day
Even when it’s cloudy books are the bane
Mere thoughts from an innocent heart led us to doing wrong
Who would confirm when adults really "mean it"?
This minute they smile, the next you are sinking in their Nile
For something you ought not to do
Which you actually did not do
And even when you do do
Your waterloo
What was our crime? That we are young?
That we know?
Or that we know not?
Whose fault was all these?

The sound of papa’s car advancing into the garage
After a busy day is like a fire alarm
That sends everyone out of safety or seeking safety
Koboko, pankere and the likes come in handy
When the brain needs to be helped

On some days foolish merchants from our cliques
Trade in with suggestions for papa’s weapons

The plan to break free yields results filled with mystery
When shall we get our victory?
This freedom is long overdue

We may have counted the years in view
Partners like JAMB would deliberately extend the torture
Considering the years of ASUU strike ended only to
Discover that the labor market is ready to sentence you
To a bigger package of frustration and bigger doom

If uncles and aunts would add a little spice to an already painful wound
Equating your ration with monitoring in absentia

We were not bold enough to filter these words out of our mouths
At times we speak only inwardly
We sleep and live in fear with unclear visions and shallow thoughts
Nightmares and dark corners were endless
Falling in to the deep den of horror

Then the terrain… scary headlines, sickness, intruders,
Kidnappers, abusers, judgmental folks, mean teachers
We never seem to be getting it right
Despite our pitfalls we had our beat
Now we are the better

Obedience, strict compliance and resilience
Got us here
This may have done some good for them
And may this bitterness not pass on
Venomous to the next gen
Hardened, deranged disgruntled or dead
NO!
Love care and empathy does it better

I can relate to the struggles you've described. It sounds like a tough upbringing, but I know life can get better sometimes. Hang in there, you got this! Hopefully, things start getting better for you soon.
