Must It Be Me?

Must it be me,
That the winds of sorrow chase,
When joy is served at many tables,
And I am left with an empty plate?

Must it be me,
Whose footsteps echo through lonely paths,
While others find the drumbeats sweet,
And dance beneath the moonlit grass?

I ask the trees, they only sway,
I ask the birds, they fly away,
The river hums but will not say,
Why storms choose me, day after day.

The elders say, “The chick that scratches early,
Finds the seed that others miss,”
But my hands are raw from digging earth,
Still, no golden seed, no bliss.

Why do my mornings taste of thorns,
While others drink honeyed light?
Why do I wrestle shadows alone,
When dawn is clothed in robes so bright?

Must it be me,
Who bears the pain that seasons bring,
To learn that even a broken drum
Can still be taught to sing?

Yet through the cracks, a whisper grows:
“The tallest tree was once a seed,
And rain must fall for crops to rise,
Your pain is carving what you need.”

So I will walk, though heavy-eyed,
And hold this truth my soul can see:
Though storms may ask a thousand times,
I’ll answer back,
It must be me.
