Land and Tribes

The world hums with voices,
a thousand different sounds.
From far-off lands,
from close-by towns.
Little groups of people,
called tribes, small and large.
They learn to speak the same way,
from when they are very young.
One tongue for the jungle green,
another for the desert sand.
Different words for sun and moon,
spoken in each land.
Some sounds are soft like falling leaves.
Others ring out, strong and clear.
Each way of talking, a special gift,
making their meaning known.
Stories pass from old to young,
carried by a unique song.
Words for laughing, words for pain,
where everyone belongs.
We may not know all the tunes,
or understand every phrase.
But every voice, every language,
lights up our world in many ways.
A rich quilt of words,
a beautiful, loud hum.
Many tongues, many tribes,
from where we all come.
