The ABC’s of emotions;
*Anxiety*
Take a deep breath in, take a deep breath out
Breathe, calm down, breathe, calm down
Just pray, have faith, be calm, don’t doubt
You have to be stronger than your emotions, or else you’ll drown.
Anxiety, my old friend, my partner, my shadow
We met a couple of days ago.
‘Just breathe’, I chanted, my new mantra, my motto
But you laughed in my face, my serenity you’d come to overthrow.
When I looked behind you, your sister waved to me
Panic attack is her dreadful name
I struggled to relax, to be calm, to be free
But she wasn’t one to give up, very uneasy to tame.
With panic attack came her dreadful son,
Hy-per-ven-ti-la-tion
When I saw his pale blue lips, I feared I was done
In my veins blood no longer flowed, there was no circulation.
Then I felt a hand on my back, firm, unmoving
I sighed exhausted, who among your many relatives could this be?
But this hand was warm, reassuring, not disapproving
I looked back and there my mum was, struggling to set me free.
‘Take a deep breath in, take a deep breath out
Breathe, calm down, breathe calm down’
I embraced her and this time, truly there was no doubt
That I would rise up again anytime I had a breakdown.
